The Project

Reading Africa from within.

A Saudi initiative towards African countries. Each station is built around the country’s own context and priorities, bringing together economy and investment, media and knowledge from the field, and humanitarian and development tracks activated where there is real need.

About the project

DEEP AFRICA starts from understanding the country: its people and culture, its economy and transformations, and its priorities as its own people express them. From that understanding, it builds field work that brings economic and investment engagement together with media and knowledge, and opens room to study humanitarian and development needs where a real need emerges.

The initiative works through independent stations, each with its own preparation and programme. Business participants meet the relevant parties, media professionals reach voices and subjects in the field, and follow-up continues after the return. What the initiative seeks is more precise knowledge, connections that can develop, and steps that can be followed through.

Why DEEP AFRICA

A relationship with any market needs understanding beyond general information: who are the right parties to engage? What are the country’s priorities? Where do participants’ interests meet its reality? Knowing societies also requires listening to their voices and observing their daily life and transformations.

DEEP AFRICA brings these two needs together in organised work. For each country it prepares a reading ahead of the visit and a programme shaped by its context, then documents what emerges in the field and what deserves follow-up afterwards.

Vision and mission

Our vision

For DEEP AFRICA to be a trusted Saudi framework for getting to know African countries from within, and for engaging with them economically, intellectually and on a human level — building professional and institutional ties that last beyond each station.

Our mission

To organise field work that starts from each country’s context and priorities, and brings economic and investment engagement together with independent media and knowledge production — giving participants deeper understanding, relevant meetings, documented content and clear follow-up paths, while studying opportunities for humanitarian and development contribution according to need and with the competent bodies.

What we aim for

  1. Deeper understanding of African countries

Offering knowledge grounded in research, sources and people’s voices, showing each country’s diversity and specificity.

  2. More relevant economic engagement

Helping companies and investors understand the context and reach parties that match their interests, as groundwork for assessment and follow-up.

  3. Media and knowledge presence from the field

Providing access to subjects, people and places, and producing content that keeps its editorial independence and accuracy.

  4. Follow-up that continues after the station

Documenting what was achieved and what needs further study, and identifying next steps and the parties responsible for following them up.

The value we work for

  • For companies and investors

Field understanding and organised engagement that help assess the right paths.

  • For media organisations

Access to voices and subjects while preserving independent editorial decisions.

  • For the host country

Room to present its context and priorities, and to build engagement with relevant Saudi parties.

Programmes and tracks

The programmes complement one another differently at each station. Their scope is set by the country’s context, the programme’s readiness, participants’ interests, and what can be carried out and followed up.

01

Economy and investment

Work begins by identifying the interests of companies and investors and understanding the market and relevant sectors. Contact points and suitable meetings are then built within each station’s confirmed programme, helping participants gain field information and assess what merits a next step.

Depending on what is approved for the country, the programme may include meetings with public and private bodies, business-to-business meetings and sector-related visits. Follow-up continues by documenting the topics raised and the next steps, while assessment and commercial decisions remain with the competent parties.

02

Media and knowledge from the field

This track listens to people and communities, and reads culture and identity, economy and development, and the country’s transformations and future. It gives media organisations and producers access to the field and the means to develop work built on research, interviews and documentation.

Possible outputs range from interviews and reports to photo stories, short films, digital content and analytical files. Participation may take the form of independent coverage, co-production or content for the initiative’s own platform, depending on agreement and rights. Each organisation keeps its editorial decision, and the nature and sources of the content are made clear.

03

Humanitarian and development

Humanitarian and development needs are read from within the country’s context, by listening to the community and the relevant bodies. This track focuses on understanding and documenting need, and on studying the possibility of contribution or cooperation with competent bodies where a real need exists.

Its scope depends on each station and on the information, coordination and approval available. Presentation distinguishes between an observed need, a proposed idea and confirmed work, with respect for people’s dignity, privacy and consent.

How we work

Each station follows a working cycle that begins before arrival and continues after the return. This sequence links research to implementation, engagement to follow-up, and experience to learning.

  1. 01

    Preparing the country

Research into the context, sectors and media themes; identifying participants’ interests; coordinating the programme and meetings.

  2. 02

    Carrying out the station

Working to the confirmed programme; holding meetings and visits; listening to people; gathering and documenting field material.

  3. 03

    Return

Organising the knowledge and content gathered; documenting the meetings and topics that need further action.

  4. 04

    Follow-up

Identifying the parties concerned and the next step for each path that can continue; referring details to the specialists.

  5. 05

    Evaluation

Reviewing what was achieved and what remains open, the quality of knowledge and engagement, and what can be improved.

  6. 06

    Preparing the next station

Drawing on the evaluation, and building an independent programme suited to the next country and its context.

What a station produces

Each station aims to produce documented knowledge of the country, content from the field, and economic and institutional connections that can be followed up. Outputs depend on the programme carried out, the topics, the rights and the participants’ capacity, and are presented according to their actual status.

The knowledge and media platform

The DEEP AFRICA platform brings the project, its stations, country files, stories and field content together in one place. Visitors can understand the country first, then explore its topics and follow what is published about it, with the sources, status and update date of information shown where needed.

Editorial independence and documentation

Media work rests on independent editorial decisions, clear sources, and respect for people and for the rights to published material. The platform distinguishes facts, proposals and objectives, and content is reviewed when newer information emerges.
